Vintage Chinese lacquer bonsai pot or planter on a brass form. Alternating layers of red and black lacquer carved in a bold classical design of intricate scrolls and clouds on 6 panels that elegantly swell out from the raised foot. The highly contrasting layers of lacquer are carved on an angle and dramatize the design. The walls of the pot gently flare out from a raised foot to a flat, decorated rim.
I imagine that it took a master craftsman to accomplish the flawless carving of the intricate design on such curvaceous panels.
|The pot is 10 inches wide on the exterior corners (8.75 from the flat edges), and 7.25 inches tall. Weighs 3 pounds.|
|Origin||Antique dealer’s estate.|
|Condition||This pot is an amazing survivor.
Almost all cinnabar with age has imperfections. May show dramatic abuse and extensive loss of lacquer.
Not so for this elegant piece.
The interior has a small ding and the typical white deposits from water. A few, nearly invisible, tiny stress cracks and small repairs that do not impact the carved design. One corner of the base was bumped into a harder object. The present repair could easily be improved upon.
